Thanks to superb goaltending from former Wing Joey MacDonald, the New York Islanders (25-41-8) grabbed a 2-0 victory over the Detroit Red Wings (49179) at Joe Louis Arena. MacDonald made 42 saves in the shutout win.

Detroit got out to a slow start in the first period, being outshot 12-9. The game’s only two goals came in the middle frame. Frans Nielsen scored a shorthanded tally at 8:41. Josh Bailey would pad New York’s lead at 15:09 when he converted on a rebound opportunity.

The Wings had their chances with the puck going off goal posts and crossbars. MacDonald was just playing at the top of his game, earning the Islanders’ first shutout over Detroit since 1981.

Despite the strong third period when the Wings registered 19 shots compared to New York’s seven, Detroit was unable to get on the board. Chris Osgood made 28 saves in the loss.

Detroit will host Nashville on Sunday at 5 p.m. at Joe Louis Arena and have another chance to win their 50th game this season, marking the fourth straight season Detroit has done so.
