The Detroit Red Wings signed right winger Todd Bertuzzi on Tuesday afternoon to a one-year deal valued at $1.5 million per the Grand Rapids Press. Reports came out late Monday night that the team was negotiating a deal with the forward, but the deal was not finalized until Tuesday. Bruce MacLeod of the Macomb Daily details Bertuzzi’s history in the league, including a short stint with the Wings in 2007, and discusses where the Wings currently sit with the salary cap.

The Associated Press spoke with GM Ken Holland about the signing:

“He gives us a veteran with a big body and skill,” Holland said. “We think he can help us on one of our top three lines. And if a team wants to get physical with us, we’ll have the option of putting Todd out there to snarl at people.” …

“Our trainers were very impressed with him physically,” Holland said. “He’s in much better shape than he was with us last time, when he was trying to revive his career after back surgery.”

The Grand Rapids Press adds more comments from Holland:

“He’s in great shape and excited to be back in Detroit,” Red Wings general manager Ken Holland said. “In the short time he was here, I really enjoyed him and so did his teammates.” …

“He brings a dimension of size, and he’s going to be a hard guy to bounce around,” Holland said. “If you look at the cap system, most teams only count on offense from their top two lines. We’ll be able to put four lines together and have some scoring depth.”

Reactions toward the signing have been mixed throughout the Wings’ blogosphere: Abel to Yzerman, Babcock’s Death Stare, On the Wings, Snapshots, The Triple Deke, Winging It In Motown, and Nightmare on Helm Street,

Chelios has participated as more of a coaching intern than a player, which was an odd feeling for the former Wing. The New York Times spoke with Cheli, who said that he has not ruled out playing in the KHL but says it would be very hard to do being that far away from his family. 2. Justin says:

    Datsyuk Zetterberg Holmstrom
    Cleary Filpulla Franzen
    Eaves Helm Bertuzzi
    Leino Draper Abdelkader

That leaves out: Maltby, Williams and all the Grand Rapids guys.

    As for the defense…

    Lidstrom Rafalski
    Ericsson Kronwall
    Stuart Delmore

Leaving out: Lebda. Janik, Lilia, Meech

Should be a fine year in Detroit, the Bertuzzi deal won’t be judged until game 1 of the playoffs. If he can stay healthy in the post season, he’ll add some much needed grit for the wings in the rough and tough Western Conference Finals.

First off Leino, Abdelkader and Delmore will definetly be training camp decisions on making the initial lineup, I don’t expect any of them over Bertuzzi, Lebda, Williams and Eaves to make it but when injuries arise we’ll have some great backup.

I’m kinda half-in, half-out on Bertuzzi. While I think it adds a depth of grit Detroit sorely needs Bertuzzi has been plauged with injuries the past few years and I don’t really see him scoring more than 12-16 goals. Grit is defeintly his selling point though, he can score too which makes for a hole pluged in the lineup…at the end of the day Detroits a better team with Todd then without him, so good signing all together. I just hope he doesn’t get hurt or flop out a zero sum season.

Team looks good though, I’ve liked all of the signings, the no show Hossa can have the Hawks…they’ll have their work cut out for them trying to turn him into a big-time playoff performer. I loved Sammy but I think it was best for both parties for him to move on, Kopecky was hurt too much and didn’t really add much in the grit department, we’re probley better off without him. And as much as I love the old goat Chris needs to call it a career before he gets himself seriously hurt, Chelios brought lots of experience that’ll pay off in years to come with our young guns.

Can’t wait for the start of the season, I know its a long shot making it to the finals three years in a row but if there’s a team that can do it, its us, the best damn team in the entire world, the Detroit Red Wings 😉

  4. That is an excellent article and I completely agree with what you said. I am trying to setup the Rss but I am not very computer literate. Can someone tell me how allow me to setup the RSS feed so I get notified of any new blog post? Make sure you explain it in an clear to see way as I ‘m getting old.
