Monday Morning Notes

As the heat swelters throughout Michigan, Centre Ice in Traverse City is the place to be.

Red Wings prospects and coaches gathered in Northern Michigan for ‘Development Camp’, a week of drills, scrimmages and off-ice workouts that allow players to get to know each other and the organization. That’s without mentioning that lakefront views in Traverse City beat cold, winter drives on I94 in the middle of the winter.

As a fan, it is difficult to assess Development Camp because with few exceptions, the players are still 2-4 years away from the National Hockey League, especially with the depth of our organization. And for those players like Brendan Smith who could contribute in 2011-12, the true test will be in September’s Training Camp, where they will be matched up with and against NHL caliber players.

The prospects have been divided into two groups, named after Winged Wheel icons Nick Lidstrom and Henrik Zetterberg. Usually, one group goes through on-ice drills, while the other does off-ice training, before alternating for the second session of the day. On Sunday, Team Lidstrom beat Team Zetterberg 5-3 in a scrimmage between the two squads, with Dean Chelios (son of Chris and a current Michigan State product) picking up the game-winner. Our friend George Malik, as always, does an excellent job with the breakdown.

Our prospects also love to Tweet, which means we may have a few players joining Mike Commodore (commie22) as DRW players on Twitter. You can follow Tomas Jurco @jurky13, Brendan Smith @bssmith7, Tyson Teichmann @teach_lights31, Ryan Sproul @sproully93, and Alan Quine @quiner26. You can also read Dana Wakiji’s piece about Sproul’s use of Twitter here.

Two other quick notes for you on this ‘Manic Monday.’

  • The Red Wings were proud to participate in Motor City Casino’s Social Media Day Detroit party on June 30th. It is always a pleasure for DRW staff, whether that be in Marketing, Sales, Social Media, or TV to interact with the fan base. All four departments were on hand for this event.
