Create YOUR NHL Dream Team

Getty Images

The General Manager of a hockey team is one of the most coveted positions in professional sports. You make the decisions on drafting, free agency, trades and contract extensions. You are also in a very public spotlight where moves are praised, scrutinized and analyzed in great deal.

All of which makes great fodder for bloggers like myself.

Your job, should you choose to accept it, is to construct your ‘NHL Dream Team’, with the following guidelines.

– Your roster must consist of 20 active NHL players, with 12 forwards, six defensemen and two goaltenders. When submitting your roster, please list the line each player will be on. (I.E. Datsyuk/Zetterberg/Holmstrom or Lidstrom/Stuart)

– You can only select ONE player from each NHL club. You may select a maximum of TWO Red Wings. With 30 NHL teams, you are not required to have every team represented.

– You must explain the reasoning of your roster and why it would be successful in 300 words or less.

– Give your roster a team name, for the sheer fun of it.

Submit your roster and reasoning to redwingssocialmedia@gmail.com by 12:00 noon on Wednesday, August 10th. We’ll have our panel of experts select three to five finalists and let our fans pick a winner on Facebook.

The General Manager with the best hypothetical ‘NHL Dream Team’ will win an autographed Nick Lidstrom ‘No Limits’ poster AND a signed ‘Jimmy Howard ‘No Limits’ poster, so be sure to submit your name and address with your entry.

Happy GMing!

All my lines I like to think have a perfect balance. They all have everything you need with scoring , hitting, and have a defensive forward to help out the d men.All the d men can do everything you need from moving the puck, to taking the puck, and taking the body. Both goalies are proven goalies in the league. All in all I think I have a young, big, fast, and skilled team that can do anything you need them to do to win a cup.

    dpair1 chara-pronger
    dpair2 doughty-weber
    dpair3 ehrhoff-suppan
    goalie1 lundquist
    goalie2 miller
ththe only thing i am missing is the captain , but really this team has everything , russian flare, canadian toughness and skill, chara and pronger could touch gloves standing on oppisite sides of the ice and they are nasty. my goalies are two of the best in the world. try to beeat me!!!!!!

  13. Afternoon Delight

    Ovechkin/Datsyuk/Stamkos
    D. Sedin/Crosby/Kane
    Parise/Thornton/Gaborik
    Nash/E. Staal/Grabner

    Lidstrom/Weber
    Doughty/Chara
    Pronger/T. Myers

    Kiprusoff/N. Backstrom

No duplicate teams and everyone with the exception of Stamkos is playing their natural position. Defense has excellent two-way defenders and offense has a ton of scoring ability. Datsyuk is surrounded by snipers. Arguably the fastest group of RWs in the game, including young and promising Grabner. Almost every player chosen has positive career plus/minus rating. Good solid veteran goalies to round out the squad. All summed up, I feel like this team can win some games!

  14. Jon says:

    Stamkos/Zetterberg/Ovechkin

    Lidstrom/Weber
    Doughty/Chara
    Burns/Byfuglien

    Miller/Lundqvist

  15. James Ziomek says:

One player from each team is stupid. It isn’t exactly a dream to have to sit one of the Sundin twins, Kessler and/or Luongo now is it?

    Regardless, I’ll be submitting 😛

  16. Carl Mersman says:

Line 1: RW Patrick Kane(Chicago) – C Pavel Datsyuk (Detroit) – LW Alex Ovechkin (Washington)
Line 2: RW Corey Perry (Anaheim) – C Sidney Crosby (Pittsburgh) – LW Daniel Sedin (Vancouver)
Line 3: RW Jarome Iginla (Calgary – C Steven Stamkos (Tampa Bay) – LW Mike Cammalleri (Montreal)
Line 4: RW Dustin Brown (Los Angelas) – C Eric Staal (Carolina) – LW Evander Kane (Winniepeg)

Defense 1: Nicklas Lidstrom (Detroit) – Chris Pronger (Philadelphia)
Defense 2: Shea Weber (Nashville) – Dan Boyle (San Jose)
Defense 3: Sergei Gonchar (Ottawa) – Ryan Whitney (Edmonton)

Goalies: Tim Thomas (Boston) – Ryan Miller (Buffalo)

I based my team off of leadership, leadership wins championships . All three of my defensive lines have a shutdown defense player/big physical presence – and also a person who knows how to contribute to the scoreboard while being a leader. All three defensive lines have the ability to put a point on the board in the clutch. As far as my offense goes, I placed players who I thought have a similar playing style together. Everyone that plays offense on my team has unrivaled hockey instinct and also a high scoring ability. Datsyuk and Ovechkin round out the top line with magician like puck moving skills that can mesmerize fans while confusing opposing defenses. It doesn’t stop there, as we get deeper into the 2nd lines we have the highest quality players who are always leaders ont heir teams in Stamkos, Crosby, D. Sedin and Iginla. Even my last line has a very solid leader in Eric Staal. In between the pipes we have the reigning Vezina trophy winner Tim Thomas and Olympic Silver Medalist (from Michigan) Ryan Miller. I truly believe this is the ultimate dream team and would soak up many stanley cup runs.

Resubmitting, same line up just had an error:

  19. Anže Beribak says:

It’s not roster with hockey stars player but it is the roster which can be great to put together.

    Line 1 – Zetterberg / Datsyuk / Holmstrom
    Line 2 – M. Hossa / H. Sedin / D.Sedin
    Line 3 – Selanne / J. Thornton / Stamkos
    Line 4 – Franzen / Kopitar / Mursak

    Defense pair 1 – Lidstrom / Weber
    Defense pair 2 – Chara / Visnovsky
    Defense Pair 3 – Kronwall / Timonen

    1st goalie – Lundqvist
    2nd goalie – Howard

Jusl like i said, it’s not mix of the best players in the league but it’s good mix of players on their positions.

    • Anže Beribak says:

Sorry guys i didn’t read “You may select a maximum of TWO Red Wings.” ,before I posted “my” dream team roster …

  20. Josh Anderson says:

    D. Sedin (VAN)-Stamkos (TB)-Iginla (CAL)
    Ovechkin (WAS)-Datsyuk (DET)-Perry (ANA)

Ericksson (DAL)-B. Richards (NYR)-M. Koivu (MIN)

    Chara (BOS)-Lidstrom (DET)
    Byfuglien (WIN)-Letang (PIT)
    Shattenkirk (COL)-Suter (NAS)

    MIller (BUF)
    Ward (CAR)

  21. Zach says:

THE ULTIMATE DREAM TEAM (After the Red Wings, of course)
    Offense
First Line- LW: Ovechkin C: Crosby RW: Datsyuk (The three most dangerous players in the league)
Second Line- LW: Corey Perry C: Joe Thornton RW: Rick Nash (Three big guys with a ton of skill is a deadly combination, nobody would want to play against this line)
Third Line- LW: Steven Stamkos C: Henrik Sedin RW: Anze Kopitar (Sedin’s vision plus Stamkos’ scoring touch plus Anze’s overall skill equals a lot of goals)
Fourth Line- LW: Iginla C: B. Richards RW: Z.Parise (A lot of hard working grit combined with skill)
    Defense
First Pair- Nick Lidstrom and Shea Weber (The two best d man in the league today, Lidstrom has the ability to play with anyone)
Second Pair- Chris Pronger and Zdeno Chara (Two monsters who can blast you and the puck from the blue line)
Third Pair- Duncan Keith and Dustin Byfuglien (Another big pair who know how to win)
    Goalies
    1. Ryan Miller (Shown he can be the best goalie in the world through last Olympics and solid play year to year)
    2. Carey Price (Has shown huge potential and consistency)

  22. Edd Austin says:

    Imagi – Nation

    Line 1 – Stamkos(TAM) / Datsyuk (DET)/C.Perry(ANA)
    Line 2 – Ovechkin (WAS)/ H. Sedin VAN)/ R.Nash(CBJ)
    Line 3 – Ericksson (DAL)/ B.Richards(NYR)/Kopitar(LAK)
    Line 4 – Z.Parise(NJD)/ E.Staal (CAR)/ / P.Kane(CHI)

    Defense pair 1 – Lidstrom(DET)/ Weber(NSH)
    Defense pair 2 – Yandle(PHX) / Byfuglien(WPG)
    Defense Pair 3 – Phaneuf(TOR) / Letang(PIT)

    1st goalie – T.Thomas (BOS)
    2nd goalie – R.Miller(BUF)

Glaring omissions Crosby, Pronger because it’s my team and I don’t want ’em. Chara would be there but then I couldn’t choose Thomas. No room for .. Inginla and Cammalleri.

    • James Ziomek says:

“Glaring omissions Crosby, Pronger because it’s my team and I don’t want ‘em.”

I love it!!!!!! This statement was pure WIN! I’m prolly gonna put Crosby on my roster but I really don’t want him either. Maybe I’ll just omit every Pittsburgh Penguin!

  23. Carlos Sanders says:

    The Outworlders
    line 1 Zetterberg Toews Perry
    Line 2 Ovechkin Stamkos Havlat
Line 3 Parise (Brad) Richards Eriksson
    Line 4 Marleau Staal Briere

    D1 Lidstrom/Chara
    D2 Weber/Doughty
    D3 Byfuglien/Bieksa

    G Rinne
    Niemi

  24. Aaron Alkema says:

Ovechkin (WAS) / Datsyuk (DET) / Perry (ANA)
    D.Sedin (VAN) /Crosby (PIT) / St.Louis (TB)
Kovalchuk (NJ) / Thornton (SJ) / Iginla (CGY)
Eriksson (DAL) / Toews (CHI) / Nash (CBJ)

    Chara (BOS) / Weber (NSH)
    Lidstrom (DET) / Pronger (PHI)
    Yandle (PHX) / Byfuglien (WPG)

    Lundqvist (NYR)
    Miller (BUF)

Forwards are pretty obvious as being the elite players in the league. Would love to see Datsyuk and Ovechkin together. Chose St. Louis over Stamkos for play making ability and lack of RW depth. Personally hate Thornton, but can’t deny his passing ability. Still think Kovalchuk is one of the top goal scorers in the league despite an awful year. On Defense Chara/Weber would be the ultimate shutdown pairing, with Byfuglien and Lidstrom being a powerplay threat. Thomas would have been #1 choice but had to go with Chara over him, and Lundqvist is IMHO the next best goalie in the league with MIller also being top 5 and showed in the olympics he can perform under pressure.

  25. Roman Tov says:

    All-Europeans AKA “Eat it, Mr.Cherry:)”.
Each forwards line except 4th is selected based on players country of origin (Russia,Sweden,Finland etc). It can really speed up on-ice communication during the game (remember great Russian 5 in Detroit?). In addition each line is a combination of experience and youth.

    Forwards:
Ovechkin / Datsyuk / Kovalchuk – all-Russians line contains 2 best available snipers (3 Rocket Richard between them, huh?) with good size and one of the best playmakers in the league.

Eriksson / H.Sedin / Hornqist- all-Swedes line has size and soft hands. Could work really well in PP and PK.
Leino / M.Koivu / Selanne – all Fins-line. Great passer Mikko Koivu is enough for Finish Flash to have another outstanding season and Leino will help in front of the net.
Hemsky / Kopitar / Havlat – Czech-Slovenian line. 2 speedy wingers with great Anze in the middle will seal the deal for me.

    Defense:
Lidstrom / Enstrom – Just couldn’t resist to have Nick on my team (sorry, Zetter:-/). Swedish pair of experience and youth. PP killer. Lots to learn for Tobias.
Markov / Chara – all experience you want for your D. Can work against any top line, PP, PK – you name it.
Timonen / Pitkanen – hockey smart and experienced Finish pair.

    Goaltenders:
Kiprusoff / Lundqvist – Scandinavian goalies are the best in my opinion. Vezina+3 nominations what else needs to be said?
